Design for Social Change
Bill FitzGibbons
The artist Bill FitzGibbons has created a light installation in order to revitalize a underutilized city walkway. In Birmingham, Alabama there is an old railway underpass which connects two urban areas together. Unfortunately, it was not being used due to poor light, perceived danger, or unpleasant pedestrian experience.
By installing a series of lights under the tunnel, Fitzgibbon has reinvented the space to not only be useful, but an area of attraction. It's this element of art and public service that makes this project so necessary. Design was implemented and therefore transformed a space adding beauty, a sense of security, and a new life.
