10 Collections Research: Patches

Patches show delicate craftsmanship and thought out elements of design in what are often small pieces of embroidered fabric. The variety of colors and designs display different styles and ideas in something that can fit in your hand. They can mean anything from symbolizing a successful space flight in things like mission patches to sports teams through embroidered logos. They are incredibly expressive pieces of art that can mean as much or as little as you want.

From denim jackets to backpacks, embroidered patches can be put or placed anywhere for the wearer to be able to express themselves in a small way. They can say something as simple as “I like this picture” to something more complex like a way of life or a piece of life advice. Patches have an endless amount of possibilities in what they express, what they depict, and the emotions they convey to others.

The patches in this collection were collected by me from 2014 to present. Some are from only a few years ago while others like the Russian mission patch are from upwards of 30 years ago. Each of the patches in this collection symbolize and promote something different and have key differences in their look and style to help show this whether it be the colors used, the wording, or the placement of certain imagery.
